In the past, when materials were transported only by human labour or with the help of small wheelbarrows, it was difficult to move the large stones that were extracted from the ground.
So winegrowers placed the large stones that were not used to build terrace walls around their vineyards. Piled up in the form of low walls, these formed a kind of enclosure called "murgères" in French-speaking Switzerland and "murgets" in France, a word derived from Old French.
