Definition: Mildew

Back
This is a serious disease affecting vines, caused by the development of algae rather than fungus, contrary to popular belief, which attacks the green parts of the plant. Mildew spores develop in very humid environments. They penetrate the green parts by emitting suckers that destroy the affected parts of the plant. Vines affected by mildew turn brown and dry out. The first symptoms appear on the upper side of the leaves in the form of yellowish oil spots. These are accompanied by a white down on the opposite side. Today, mildew is easily controlled through preventive measures involving the repeated application of specific fungicides.
