Definition: Massette

A small hammer once used by children to break stones in the vineyards.

During spring hoeing, it was customary to leave stones in plain sight so that they could be broken up during the summer.

Stones that broke the teeth of pickaxes were removed, as repairs by the blacksmith were expensive.
