Large wine bottles are named, in ascending order of capacity, as follows:Magnum - Double Magnum - Jeroboam - Rehoboam - Methuselah - Salmanazar - Balthazar - Nebuchadnezzar - Solomon. Large bottles from Rehoboam upwards are no longer produced industrially. The purchase price of the empty glass, which is handcrafted, alone is very high. For example, the Nebuchadnezzar (15 litres) costs CHF 400 and the Solomon (18 litres) CHF 910. For more details, see these names. As for the mainly biblical origin of these names, it dates back to the dawn of time, and without finding a precise explanation, these names have been borrowed from great figures of ancient history. There are a few examples of very, very large bottles, produced for special occasions. The one that holds all the records, Maximus, commissioned in 2004 by the Morton Steak House chain in the USA, contains 130 litres of Beringer Vineyard Private Reserve 2001.
