In 1995, the Comitato Nazionale defined 132 IGTs spread across almost all of the peninsula's wine-growing regions. Piedmont opted out of this classification, based on the notion that all of its production should at least meet the DOC (approx. 300 areas) and DOCG (13 areas) standards. The IGT regulations are therefore not very strict. They mainly regulate grape varieties, production quantities and alcohol content.
