Back

Around a hundred articles shed light on various aspects of this history, which spans more than twenty-three centuries, from grape varieties and traditions to changes in the landscape. This is valuable knowledge for promoting our heritage and positioning our wines on the international market.

The volume is available in two editions, French and German. The latter will be available in spring 2010.

Geschichte von Rebe und Wein im Wallis – von den Anfängen bis heute.

Valais wines finally have their own encyclopaedia (570 pages)!

We are delighted to present "Geschichte von Rebe und Wein im Wallis - von den Anfängen bis heute" (History of Vines and Wine in Valais - from the beginnings to today), a reference work that takes stock of all the latest discoveries and findings on viticulture in the Rhone Valley. This is a unique project worldwide, which, under the direction of the Valais Vine and Wine Museum, has mobilised over 30 scientists over a period of six years.

Around a hundred articles report on more than 23 centuries of wine history, grape varieties, traditions and the development of the vineyard landscape. These are valuable insights that enhance our wine heritage and position Valais crus on the international market.

The German version of the work will be available in spring 2010.

? A significant investment

The research project and publication cost CHF 1,800,000.

The main financial support came from the State of Valais, the Loterie Romande and the Interprofession Valaisanne de la Vigne et du Vin (IVV).

The MVVV also received contributions from the Universities of Lausanne and Geneva, as well as from the City of Sierre and the Municipality of Salgesch.

To our knowledge, no other wine-producing region in the world has invested in such research.
