Definition: Garrafeira port

Back
This type of port is almost exclusively reserved for consumption in Portugal. It comes from a single vintage but is a blend of wines selected from among the best from different sources. It is often vinified for several years in barrels, then in 5 to 10 litre demijohns or even in carboys, like Madeira. After 20, 30 or even 40 years in these glass containers, the wine is racked and bottled in 75 cl bottles, without sediment. The Niepoort house continues this tradition by producing deeply fruity garrafeira ports, combined with the mellow texture characteristic of tawny ports.
