Definition: Franc de pied

For a vine that was not originally grafted onto a rootstock, and is therefore susceptible to phylloxera. Ungrafted vines are rare. They are found in sandy soils (see sand wine) and in well-isolated countries such as Chile, with the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Andes Mountains on the other, sheltered from phylloxera.
