An assembly of 7 to 9 half-staves that form the bottom of a barrel. The bottoms are assembled using steel dowels, with a river rush joint between each stave, then cut to a precise diameter marked with a compass. The bottom is bevelled to fit into the jable, the groove in the staves of the body. Syn.: fonçaille.
