Wine and biscuit producers in the small village of Champagne in the canton of Vaud can count on political support in their fight to retain their appellation. The Vaud deputies and other federal parliamentarians are committed to amending the law on trademark protection and want to include this issue in the agri-food free trade negotiations with the EU.
The dispute between producers in the village of Champagne in Vaud and France has been going on for several years. France bases its claim on the 1974 Franco-Swiss agreement, which generally reserves the appellation "Champagne" for French producers. The negotiation of the 1999 agreement on agricultural trade between Switzerland and the EU did not allow for this to be challenged. France had received the support of the Community institutions and other EC Member States.
In viticulture, champagne refers exclusively to sparkling wines produced using the traditional method in the French region of the same name.
