Definition: Chalk

Back
Soil of calcareous origin, soft and crumbly. Rock composed of 90% calcium carbonate. Rock of biological origin (coccoliths). Its composition is favourable for vine cultivation. Chalk soils are permeable. They provide good drainage and the roots can easily develop deep down. The best example is the Côte des Blancs in Champagne.
