Definition: chaintre

A narrow strip of land at the end of vineyard plots. Known as sendéir (path) in the Bordeaux region, these spaces allow machinery to pass and manoeuvre at the end of rows. They are also an effective defence against soil erosion. Grass verges must be maintained. Today, they are often replaced by unsightly cement gutters, which are very useful for collecting surface water.
