Definition: capite

Back

In the days when winegrowers travelled only on foot, capites played an essential role in the vineyard. Most of the time, people would leave to work in the vineyard for the day. They would take food with them and could shelter in their capites for meals, to protect themselves from the intense heat, heavy rain or extreme cold.

Those days are long gone since the advent of roads in the vineyards and motorised transport. However, these small vineyard houses have not disappeared, with their old-fashioned style. Their typical architecture enhances the vineyard and still provides the winegrower with a providential shelter, a place to rest or socialise.
