The Bündner Herrschaft is actually the northernmost tip of Graubünden, but the southernmost in terms of climate. Fog is rare here, but the foehn wind blows over the vineyards and orchards when autumn is already well advanced, causing the sugar content of the fruit to skyrocket, which guarantees excellent wines. Chur, the capital of Graubünden and the centre of the region, is located in the Rhine Valley. In no time at all, the Rhaetian Railway or the Graubünden PostBus will take you to discover many tourist regions, large and small.
The most important wine-growing area is concentrated around the Bündner Herrschaft and its municipalities of Fläsch, Maienfeld, Jenins and Malans. In the Graubünden Rhine Valley, Zizers, Trimmis, Chur and Felsberg are also important wine-growing municipalities.
There are also a few vineyards in Igis, Domat/Ems and Bonaduz. Currently, 42 different grape varieties are grown in Graubünden. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety for Graubünden wines, accounting for 79% of the wine-growing area. No other canton attaches such importance to Pinot Noir. This grape variety originates from Burgundy and first appeared in Graubünden at the beginning of the 17th century. Two good reasons to call Graubünden "the Swiss Burgundy".
Riesling x Sylvaner, which accounts for 8% of the vineyards, is the second most important grape variety in Graubünden.
