Definition: brante

Back

The women harvested the grapes in baskets or mestres, which they then poured into brantes, a type of waterproof backpack placed at the bottom of the vineyard. To save space, the men crushed the grapes with a chamoloir, a kind of treading machine made from a tree branch with three spikes. They then loaded the brante onto the back of the brantard, who carried it to the cart or, often, directly to the cellar. The basket contained 50 kg of grapes, to which must be added the weight of the well-soaked basket (18 kg) to make it as waterproof as possible. It was therefore the strongest men who transported the harvest in this way. The basket was also used for work in the cellar.
Expression: Harvesting grapes with a basket.
