With 100,000 hectares, this grape variety is the third most widely grown red wine grape in Spain, after Grenache and Monastrell (Mourvèdre). Rich in colour, it is a good variety for rosé wines.

Identification/origin: a grape variety widely cultivated in Spain, much less so or even non-existent in France.
Synonyms: Espagnol in the Var region, Carignan d'Espagne.
