Sloe, fruit of the blackthorn, wild plum tree, blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), from the Old French belloche, beloche and the Celtic *bulluca, small plum. Quote: "Here is the range of vines, the patched-up calvaries, the small humpbacked dry stone walls, here is this hasty arrangement between the bellos and the barberries."
