Definition: Bag-in-Box®

Back

From English, literally: bag in box (abbreviation: BIB) is a carefully designed packaging system also known as a "wine fountain" or "boxed wine" in French-speaking countries. It is a significantly improved version of the cubitainer, as it is filled with wine or fruit juice under vacuum. The flexible, sturdy envelope and its double-lever tap prevent even the slightest amount of air from entering. The container is protected by sturdy cardboard packaging with a carrying handle, in the shape of a cube. This prevents oxidation, meaning the wine can be consumed on demand and kept in a cool place for a month or two without deteriorating. The small three-litre model fits easily into the refrigerator. You can enjoy a glass of wine as an aperitif without having to open a whole bottle. If you're going on holiday, leave the opened Bag-in-Box in a cool place and you'll find it intact when you return (barring burglary!).

What changes with the Bag-in-Box is the container, not the contents. Local wines, varietal wines and AOC wines are all stored in this modern-day amphora. This innovative concept preserves the quality of the product and offers flexibility of use for the consumer's enjoyment. Bag-in-Box is usually designed for a capacity of 3, 5, 10 and even 20 litres. It is characterised by its flexibility of use. Small and easy to store, even in the refrigerator (3 and 5 litres), it allows individuals to pour themselves a glass of wine whenever they want, according to their mood, without ever compromising the vacuum preservation of the remaining wine.

Other advantages include the reduced weight of the bottles, the smaller size, and the very light and compact empty packaging (which can be easily crushed).

For restaurateurs, wine bars and other canteens (10 and 20 litres), it is a fabulous tool. Professionals can offer their customers a wide range of wines by the glass without having to invest in expensive glass-by-glass serving equipment protected by inert food-grade gas. Ideal for all social gatherings, it is also the most suitable container for wine for enjoyment, for lunches in the countryside and other outdoor barbecues. With a technique combining flexibility and innovation, the packaging ensures long-term preservation of opened wine and satisfaction, glass after glass, for more than 8 weeks! Bag-in-Box sales are growing rapidly in France, Europe and around the world; it is truly the packaging of choice for everyday wine today. Some of the most reputable wine producers and merchants now offer quality wines in this clever packaging, which also protects against cork taint.
