- Synonym: Pinot-Auxerrois. In the south-west, a black grape variety is called Auxerrois: this is Côt or Malbec.
- Description: small to medium-sized, compact bunches; small, spherical berries, dull golden white, thin skin and soft pulp.
- Production characteristics: early bud break, low fertility when pruned short. This grape variety particularly likes calcareous soils. It is susceptible to grape worms, mildew and grey rot, and very susceptible to powdery mildew. Regular yield and good alcohol content. Maturity: early.
- Approved clones: two in total, 56 and 57.
- Type of wine/Aromas: part of the Alsace appellation's grape varieties. Produces a medium-quality, neutral wine, sometimes lacking in acidity. It is often vinified with Pinot Blanc, to which it brings its fruity character. Aromas of exotic fruits, spices, white flowers and grapefruit.
A white grape variety in Alsace that has never had a real reputation or identity. However, it takes effort to rescue it from its unjustly obscure existence and give it an identity that is known to all: Auxerrois is also hidden in Alsace under the names Klevner or Clevner, and often in blends such as Edelzwicker or Crémant.
It is appreciated for the density, richness and complexity it can bring when blended with Pinot Blanc. In Alsace, it can be hidden under a Pinot Blanc label when blended with wine from this grape variety.
