Developed by Dr Siegert during the South American wars of independence, this bitter is made from various herbs and plants that were used to combat the depressing effects of the tropical climate. Angostura became so popular that Siegert founded the company that still markets it today in the early 19th century. It is used all over the world, especially in cocktails.
