The Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence appellation area is located in the western part of the limestone region of Provence. It stretches from the Durance to the Mediterranean Sea, and from the Rhône Valley in the west to the Sainte-Victoire mountain in the east.
It is between the reliefs formed by a succession of ridges parallel to the coastline – the Nerthe, Fare, Eguilles and Trévaresse ranges, and the Costes ridge extended by the Alpilles – that the sedimentary basins where wine-growing activity is concentrated are located.
The second largest appellation in Provence, covering an area of 3,500 hectares, the Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence vineyards cover a compact area of forty-nine communes, most of which are located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, with a small enclave in the Var (the communes of Rians and Artigues).
A wide range of wines:
With a maximum authorised yield of 60 hectolitres per hectare, the appellation's annual production averages 180,000 hectolitres, divided into:
- 55% rosé wines,
- 40% red wines
- 5% white wines.
It is produced by 74 estates and châteaux and 14 cooperative wineries.
