The elegance of the château's classical architecture makes it one of the jewels of the Médoc. Under Henri III, it was the stronghold of the Dukes of Epernon and in particular of Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette. An all-powerful man, legend has it that ships passing his castle had to lower their sails as a sign of allegiance. Hence the name Beychevelle, meaning "Lowered Sail", and the château's emblem, a ship with the prow of a griffin, guardian of the wine crater of Dionysus.
