Discover the lesser-known wines of the Italian Riviera
Nestled between the sea and the hills, Liguria is a unique wine-growing region in north-western Italy. Its sun-drenched terraced vineyards produce wines with a distinct character, made in limited quantities. From Levante to Ponente, each wine reflects the region’s rugged terrain and time-honoured expertise.
Liguria is best known for its fresh, fruity white wines, but it also produces elegant reds and rare sweet wines. Whites dominate production, with crisp, briny profiles that pair perfectly with Mediterranean cuisine. The reds, which are less well known, appeal for their finesse rather than their power.
Vermentino, Pigato and Bianco Locale are the flagship white grape varieties. As for reds, Rossese di Dolceacqua is iconic, producing delicate and aromatic reds. Each grape variety expresses itself differently depending on the soil, aspect and proximity to the sea.
The region boasts several DOC and IGT appellations, such as Colli di Luni DOC, Rossese di Dolceacqua DOC and Cinque Terre DOC. These labels guarantee the origin, character and quality of Ligurian wines.
The Cinque Terre, Colli di Luni, Baia de Levante and the Ponente hills all offer spectacular scenery. Areas such as Luni, Dolceacqua and Poggio have become must-visit destinations for lovers of authentic wines.
Ligurian viticulture relies on intensive manual labour, often on narrow terraces. Wineries and estates such as Lunae, Durin, Gorleri and Maixei uphold traditional methods, whilst mastering modern techniques to preserve the purity of the fruit. Elio Altare, a renowned Piedmontese winemaker who fell in love with the Cinque Terre, has also tried his hand at viticulture in the region.
Ligurian white wines are the perfect accompaniment to fish, seafood and pesto. A Vermentino or a Pigato enhances coastal cuisine, whilst a Rossese rosso pairs well with white meats and light Italian dishes.
Vermentino, Pigato, Rossese di Dolceacqua and certain Lunae vintages are among the most highly regarded.
It is an iconic sweet wine from the Cinque Terre, produced in very small quantities on steep vineyards.
