19/20 Jancis Robinson: "Blaickish ruby with hardly any suggestion of ageing. That very refined lift of Lafite on the nose - oyster shells? Very elegant indeed - no dry tannins. Complete and with enough juice. A very fine Lafite. Lovely graphite finish - sinewy. No heaviness at all. And the tannins are SO well managed!" ; 95/100 Wine Advocate, R. Parker ; 19/20 Guide Vert RVF ; 19/20 Vinum Wine Magazine.

Viticulture

Lafite was already recognised as one of the best Bordeaux wines in the 17th century, when it was exported to London. It was bought from the de Ségur family by Baron James de Rothschild in 1868 and became Lafite-Rothschild. The estate is divided into 3 distinct plots. The soil is remarkable, composed of fine, deep gravel mixed with windblown sand on a clay-limestone base from the Tertiary period. The density is 8,500 vines/ha.

Oenology

The grapes are then destemmed and lightly crushed. After alcoholic fermentation, maceration lasts from 10 to 20 days. The wine is put into vats for malo, with a separate press wine. The first 4 months of ageing are done in batches, then the blending is done in stainless steel tanks before the wine is put back into 100% new barrels for 14 months in two separate barrel cellars.
