Sadie Family has established itself as a leading name in the Swartland region and a driving force behind the revival of South African wine. Eben Sadie champions a terroir-focused approach, crafting precise and elegant wines from old vines and Mediterranean grape varieties well-suited to the Cape climate. Skerpioen (Scorpion) is a wine from a very unique location halfway between Dwarskersbos and Elands Bay on the West Coast, grown in chalky limestone soils. It is one of the coolest parts of the Swartland region, 2km from the Atlantic coast. One of the most amazing aspects of this location is the fact that the soils are chalky (limestone). This location is home to some of the most intense south-easterly winds and the old vines look almost abused after having been battered by winds and blowing sand for years and years.
Oenology
After harvesting, the grapes are cooled and then whole bunch pressed for about 3 hours. Fermentation then takes place in used foudres. Once fermentation is completed, the wine is left on lees for the first 12 months before bottling.
Suggestions for accompaniment
Grilled fish tacos with mango and lime salsa • Creamy burrata with roasted peaches and basil • Chicken skewers marinated in citrus and fresh herbs.
