In 2023, Palladius displays an incredibly bright colour for a wine from 24 months of ageing. The inclusion of more acidic and lower alcohol-driven varieties has contributed much to the increased freshness of the resulting wine. This vintage displays a lime zesty and green apple entry of aromatics and a line of salinity that stretches throughout. On the palate, the tannins present themselves incredibly refined and balanced, intertwined with fresh acidity and a long-lasting aftertaste. Potentially, the wine of the vintage! Tim Atkin : 98/100 ; James Suckling : 97/100 ; Vinous : 95/100.

Viticulture

Sadie Family has established itself as a leading name in the Swartland region and a driving force behind the revival of South African wine. Eben Sadie champions a terroir-focused approach, crafting precise and elegant wines from old vines and Mediterranean grape varieties well-suited to the Cape climate. Over the past 7 years Palladius has been the wine that grew the most in quality and refinement and much of this has to do with the addition of more vineyards and the improvement of their viticulture. With 17 vineyards, this wine represents the biggest canvas of the Swartland.

Oenology

Grapes are sourced from 17 vineyards in Paardelberg, Piketberg, and St. Helena Bay. Whole-bunch pressed for 2–3 hours, they undergo natural fermentation in concrete eggs and clay amphoras, with each vineyard using the same vessel annually. The wine matures 12 months in these vessels, then an additional 12 months in foudres before bottling.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Sea bass carpaccio with citrus and fleur de sel • Risotto with green asparagus and Parmesan • Roasted chicken breast.
