2009 was a year of low yields, accentuated by a virtual absence of rain during the ripening period. The vines budded early, growing vigorously but not very productively. The grapes also ripened early. After a cool start to ripening, the summer turned scorching hot and the harvest began in September, after two months of drought. These conditions produced concentrated musts, rich in colour, tannin and sugar. All in all, 2009 is an exceptional vintage, on a par with the great Vintage Ports of the 20th century, perfect for long ageing.
Oenology
After the harvest, these wines are selected by the estate's panel of tasters, then matured in oak tuns for two winters. They are then tasted again the following spring. If their quality proves exceptional, they are retained for the final blend.
