Viticulture
In 1778, Etienne Théodore Dumoulin bought a piece of moorland that had belonged to the Ségur family at auction. Suspecting that vines could be grown there, he gradually cleared the land and planted the first hectares of Montrose. The Château's vines cover a vast, homogeneous area in a single block along the Gironde, on a siliceous-gravelly hilltop above a superbly exposed layer of clay and marl. 2nd wine: Dame de Montrose.
Oenology
After manual harvesting, the grapes are sorted before being poured into temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Alcoholic maceration lasts around 30 days. The Grand Vin de Montrose is aged in barrels, 70% new, for 18 months.
Suggestions for accompaniment
Duck fillet • Saffron veal tagine • Mushroom fricassee.
