Etna rosso, Calderara Sottana, T. Terre Nere - 2020

Do we still need to introduce the artist Marco de Grazia and his Terre Nere estate? In the last few vintages, Calderara Sottana gives a wine of great character, with balsamic aromas and a hint of spices and tobacco; the body is supremely elegant, with a finesse of grain that recalls Burgundy. Technique

Viticulture

Vines located in the municipality of Randazzo, in Contrada Calderara. Planted in 1957 and 1967. Soil of volcanic ash, pumice and pieces of rock expelled from the volcano. The vineyard is clinging to the north face of Mount Etna, at 650-700 metres above sea level.

Oenology

Maceration for 10 to 15 days followed by 18 months in oak barrels (25% new wood). Malolactic fermentation is done in barrel. Unfiltered.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Golden quail with figs • Osso bucco and polenta • Langoustines..

Created in the early 2000s by the charismatic Marco De Grazia, Tenuta delle Terre Nere is located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, in the most renowned area. The property consists of 34 hectares divided into 24 plots. Due to the volcanic origin, the soils differ greatly from one vineyard to another and also within each one, which increases the complexity of the wines as much as their personality.
