Under Henri III, it was the stronghold of the Dukes of Epernon and in particular of Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette. An all-powerful man since, according to legend, ships passing his castle had to lower their sails as a sign of allegiance. Hence the name Beychevelle meaning "Lowered Sail" and the emblem of the castle, a ship with a griffin bow, guardian of the wine crater of Dionysus.
