Viticulture

The elegance of the classical architecture of the château makes it one of the jewels of the Médoc. Under Henri III, it was the stronghold of the Dukes of Epernon and in particular of Jean-Louis Nogaret de la Valette. An all-powerful man since, according to legend, ships passing his castle had to lower their sails as a sign of allegiance. Hence the name Beychevelle meaning "Lowered Sail" and the emblem of the castle, a ship with a griffin bow, guardian of the wine crater of Dionysus.

Oenology

The estate covers 250 hectares, 90 of which are planted with vines on a deep Garonne gravel terroir. Average age of the vines: 28 years, with planting densities of 10,000 vines/ha. Traditional winemaking and 18 months' ageing in oak barrels, half of which are renewed every year.
