Barolo Cerretta, Luigi Baudana (Vajra) - 2017

  • Provenance: Piedmont
  • Appellation: Barolo
  • Domain: G.D. Vajra
  • Grape variety(ies): Nebbiolo
  • On-call time: 20 years
  • Style of wine: Vin de grand terroir
  • Alcohol degree: 15%
This wine is the result of a collaboration between Luigi Budana and the Vajra family, who bought his estate to give it a new impetus and expand its portfolio of southern Barolos. It is a wine of noble austerity, with a recognisable mineral expression: ripe cherry and raspberry aromas emerge from the glass; menthol and leather notes add depth. Full-bodied and refined, Cerretta is distinguished by elegant tannins, great structure and a freshness that is perfectly balanced with its ripe fruit. Even though it is claimed by many producers, and not the least, it is one of the very best, because here firmness is transformed into distinction! Wine Spectator: 96/100; Jeb Dunnuck: 96/100; James Suckling: 96/100; Vinous, A. Galloni: 95/100; The Wine Independent: 95/100; Wine Enthusiast: 94/100

This wine is the result of the collaboration between Luigi Budana and the Vajra family, who bought his estate to give it a new impetus and to expand its portfolio of Barolo wines from the southern part of the appellation. Cerretta is one of Serralunga d'Alba's greatest vintages and is located on the south and southeast slopes of the village. Formerly called Cerretta Piani, the 0.8 ha plot is on limestone marl. Average yield of 40 hl/ha.

Maceration for 30-40 days, temperature control, traditional vinification, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, natural malolactic fermentation during the first year, and 42 months' ageing in 25-50 hl Slovenian tuns. The resulting wine is undoubtedly one of the most elegant, complex and refined Barolos to be tasted to date, often with typical floral notes.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Maccheroni with truffles - Risotto with boletus - Confit veal shank with gremolata sauce - Cheese.
