Barbaresco, Gaja - 2021

  • Provenance: Piedmont
  • Appellation: Barbaresco
  • Domain: Gaja
  • Grape variety(ies): Nebbiolo
  • On-call time: 20 years
  • Alcohol degree: 14%
It opens slowly with a complex nose of bramble, black fruit and liquorice, then evolves into truffles, rose and tar. The body is dense, streamlined, articulated on a superb tannic structure that is both nervous and fresh. The finish, still reserved, suggests a great ageing potential (twenty-five years minimum). To enjoy it today, ideally decant for two hours and serve at 18°. James Suckling : 95/100

Viticulture

This wine is made from grapes from 8 vineyards located in the municipality of Barbaresco, in the historical cultivation area delimited in 1933. The altitude varies from 250 to 330 metres. The soils are made up of clay-limestone marl. The vines are on average forty years old. This is the historic vintage of the estate.

Oenology

The grapes from each vineyard are separated and follow the classic maceration and fermentation process, in steel tanks for a period of about 3 weeks. After maturing in barrels for 12 months, the 14 origins are blended and then matured for a further 12 months in large traditional tuns.

Suggestions for accompaniment

Roast duck - Saddle of chamois - White truffle risotto.

Producer of Barolo and of Barbaresco.
